Twenty tags: how Steam decides what a game is like
The small words under the description do a lot of work
Under every Steam description there is a row of small words: Strategy, Medieval, City Builder and so on. Those tags are one of the main ways Steam decides who sees a game.
A store page can carry twenty. The order matters, because the first few weigh most when Steam picks the "more like this" row and the queues where a game is recommended.
For Age of Medieval the difficulty is that it does several things: you build a village, you trade, you fight real-time battles, you run a dynasty. Tag it as everything and Steam shows it to nobody in particular. So the top tags say the plain core, medieval strategy with building and real-time battles, and the rest add detail.
