A lord in Age of Medieval marches with soldiers, and also with a few people who have names.
Companions are found in taverns and on the road. Each has skills of their own, and those skills count for your party. Each carries their own gear, which you can change on the equipment screen with what you loot, buy or forge.
They are not immortal furniture. A companion can be wounded in battle and needs time to recover, and a wounded one fights worse.
Who you take on says something as well. Giving a place to a lord's bastard pleases his father's House, and the companion brings a character along, with opinions about how you treat prisoners and promises.
