Not every quarrel in Age of Medieval ends in a battle. Some end at the customs house.
Every House charges a tariff on what you sell in its markets, and the rate follows the relationship: 7% as a rule, 15% if they are hostile, 2% once you sign a trade deal.
The embargo is the other tool. Declare one and every stall and route between your two Houses closes the same day, with no war and no soldiers. It costs you the trade too, so it is a real choice.
The other Houses use the same instruments on each other and on you. You may wake up to find a neighbour has shut his markets to you, and the game will tell you who and where.
