The people in your village are not a number at the top of the screen. Click a villager and you get a sheet: name, family, trade, and the house they sleep in. Click a house and you see who lives there.
Families move as families. Each one takes the first empty house, and when there is none, the game tells you that a family wants to come and has nowhere to live.
Work is assigned by you or by the governor you appoint in the village hall. Who cuts wood and who carries stone is a real allocation: take a man off the field for the building site and the field yields less.
