Pick your caravan's stops
Two to five stops, and a screen that tells you when a route is a bad deal
A route in Age of Medieval is a circuit: two to five stops joined by road, run by a caravan that buys low and sells high on its own.
The caravan is not naive. It only loads what pays for the freight, and it counts what the destination will have produced by the time it arrives. The route screen shows profit per day, so you can see which circuit is working and which is just walking.
When a route cannot pay, the screen says "this route is not a deal" before you commit, for example when you try to carry timber to a village that cuts its own.
Prices come from what people actually need: a village with no salt pays far more for it than a town with its own source. Finding those gaps is the trade game.
