The clip below is a few seconds of an assault. Here is what to look at.
Outside the wall are the engines the attacker spent days building. Each has a job: the ram is for the gate, the siege tower puts men on the wall walk, the trebuchet breaks wall from far away. The mantlets in front are there to stop arrows.
The wall has a state. Each stretch takes damage separately and shows it, from whole to cracked to breached. The attackers need one opening; the defenders need to guess which one it will be.
Behind the gate there is no arena. There are the streets and houses that somebody laid out, in peace, months earlier. The attackers have to find their way through a village they have never seen, and the defenders know every corner. When the village is yours, you are the one who drew those corners.
