Drag a field to the size the land allows
Fields, orchards and pastures from 2x2 to 6x6
A field in Age of Medieval is not a building with a fixed footprint. You drag it out over the ground, anywhere from 2x2 to 6x6 cells, and the same goes for orchards and pastures.
Size is a trade. A large field can feed a street of houses, but only if there are enough people to work it; a 6x6 field with two farmers is mostly weeds. The work panel shows how many hands each one has.
The soil counts as well. Fertility changes from place to place, and the ghost tells you what you are about to plant on before you click.
Fields outside the wall are the first thing an attacker reaches. Fields inside it need a longer wall. Every village you see on the map, yours or another lord's, has made that choice somewhere.
