Devlog: seven ranks from hamlet to walled town
Each rank asks for something you have to build
The village you found with a cart is a hamlet. Seven ranks later it can be a walled town, and the same ladder applies to every settlement on the map.
No rank is bought with coins alone. Each asks for something that has to stand on the ground: a closed palisade, a keep, a stone wall with towers, a market square. The game counts your actual plan, so a ring with a gap in it is not a ring.
The seat itself is built in stages. Each stage asks for material, and your people haul it from the storehouse; if you are short, a button lets you buy what is missing from the market at the going price. With a governor organising the work, a castle takes days, not an afternoon.
In the castle you then place what a lord needs: the keep, the courtyard, stables, an armoury. The other Houses climb the same ladder at their own pace, which is why castles are rare early in a campaign and worth taking later.
