Devlog: an army breaks before it dies

Morale, the rout mark and what a fallen hero costs

Battles in Age of Medieval rarely end with the last man. They end when one side stops believing it can win.

Each side has a morale bar at the top of the screen, and a small mark on it shows where the army breaks. Every loss pushes the bar down, and the push is proportional to the size of the army: losing three men out of twelve hurts far more than three out of twenty-four.

Two things move it sharply. When a hero falls, his side loses a large piece at once; the bar shakes and the lost part stays lit for a moment so you see it even with your eyes on the fight. And while a hero is still standing, his side slowly recovers, never above the morale it started with.

An army does not arrive fresh by default, either. The morale of your party on the map is the morale it starts the battle with. Cross the mark and the side routs, and the pursuit is where a win becomes a rout.

Age of Medieval is developed by UnderStudio in UnderStudio 2D and published by Brasa Interactive. It releases on 17 May 2027.
