A new village in Age of Medieval starts with twelve people and 48 firewood. That does not last a winter.
Every villager eats, burns firewood and wears out clothes, every day. So the first season is a race: houses for the families, a woodcutter by the trees, a place to turn logs into firewood, a field. In our own test run on normal difficulty, three houses, a woodcutter, a firewood shed and one field take the village from 12 people to 23 by day 24, with the woodpile growing.
The game warns you before the snow, and each house keeps its own pantry.
If it goes wrong, people do not vanish. A family with nothing to eat packs up and walks to the neighbour's village, and you watch them go.
