Twelve passes over the interface
The unglamorous work of making a strategy game readable
Nobody wishlists a game for its top bar. But a strategy game is played through its panels, and a bad one loses the player before the good systems get a chance.
Last year we stopped adding and audited what was there, in twelve passes: the top bar, the pause notice, the settlement panels, the build palette, the forge, the colour theme, the hints, the animations, the battle orders.
Most fixes were small and specific. A button that was disabled now says why. A warning that repeated every day now shows once, then every few days with a counter. A sentence that appeared in Portuguese on an English screen got its translation and a test that refuses the next one.
The list is not finished, and we do not think it ever is. The before-and-after captures stay in the repository so we can see whether we are still improving.
