The castle that was built in a day
A fix that worked too well, and the mechanism that replaced it
Here is a bug we caused by doing the right thing.
Building work used to have a hard cap: no more than eight builders on a site, whatever the size of the village. It was an arbitrary number, and our own rule says arbitrary numbers have to go. So it went. Material would now come from real market stock and the whole village could work on the seat.
The next test run built a castle in one day. Seventy-nine people turned up. The amount of work a castle needed had been tuned for eight.
Putting the cap back would have been the multiplier fix we do not allow ourselves. Instead the work now comes from the catalogue of pieces and from what the quarry and the mine can really yield per day. Stone has to be cut before it can be laid. With a governor running the site, the same castle now takes about twelve days, and no line of code says "twelve".
