Rule zero: no fixing it with a multiplier

If the world is short of iron, find out why

Every simulation game has a file full of magic numbers. When villages starve, you double the harvest. When iron runs out, you triple the mines. It works on the day and rots the game.

Our rule zero says: the world is alive, and nothing is fixed by decree. If a number is wrong, there is a mechanism missing.

Iron is the example. In a three-year test world, iron ran out everywhere. The easy fix was a bigger number. The fix we shipped was a market: a high price now makes Houses open mines, and a vein goes deeper as the mine is worked. In the next test run, iron circulated again and nobody had edited a yield.

It is slower to work this way. But a world that balances because of prices and roads behaves sensibly in situations we never tested, and a world held up by multipliers does not.
