The game is 2D, but the buildings start in 3D. Each one is modelled once in Blender and then rendered from a fixed camera, in the four rotations a player can place it in.
Then it is done three times, because there are three peoples and they do not build alike: Valan in timber, Corvus in dark stone, Murth in adobe. The kit for the villages alone holds more than six hundred rendered pieces.
Rendering from a model instead of drawing each view keeps every piece under the same light and on the same grid. That matters in a game where you rotate a barn to squeeze it between two houses and it has to look right all four ways.
It also means that when a piece needs a new state, like a wall that has been breached, we render it for every people at once.
